About Advanced MIC

Ken Alger, Chair, joined the AMIC Board in September 2015. After a 30+ year career in varied roles most of which were at the executive level, Mr. Alger took early retirement from TD Bank in November 2014. He explains, “It was time to step back and refocus on priorities that became more important to me – family, friends & community – while still maintaining my connections to the business community especially in areas of People Development, Growing Business Opportunities and Governance.” Mr. Alger is involved in the community and has served on both the Queensway Carleton Hospital Foundation and Hospital (QCH) boards over the past 9 years. He is currently Vice Chair of the board and chairs the Audit & Finance Committee as well as sits on the Executive Committee and the Human Resource and Executive Compensation Committees. This year (2018/19) he was elected to the position of President of the College of Kinesiologists of Ontario, a public appointment from the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care (MOHLTC), where he also Chairs the Registration Committee and sits on the Quality Assurance Committee. Per Mr. Alger, “Paying back by paying forward is a new mantra that I live by.”

Denise Buckley joined the Advanced MIC board in November 2022 

Denise Buckley is an experienced leader in the home financing space with more than 16 years focused on alternative lending. 

Throughout her career Denise has held roles with Wells Fargo, boutique firms and Bank of Montreal, focusing on all areas of the business from sales, credit risk adjudication, and creating policies and procedures. 

She has been recognized twice within the industry as a “Woman of Influence”.  

Outside her professional pursuits Denise enjoys watching baseball, playing golf, cycling and puzzling. 

 

Michael Hapke is the President, Chief Executive Officer and Director of Advanced Mortgage Investment Corporation, Advanced Alternative Lending (“the manager”), Advanced Capital Corporation (“the agent”) and Mortgage Brokers City Inc., a brokerage which originates mortgage applications for the MIC. All of the companies are related and connected companies by virtue of common ownership and control.

Michael Hapke is one of the founding partners of the Advanced Group of Companies (or "AGC") and is the visionary behind the Mortgage Brokers Ottawa/City brand (or "MBCI"), Advanced Alternative Lending (or "AAL"), Advanced Capital Corporation (or "ACC"), and Advanced Mortgage Investment Corporation or ("AMIC"), setting the strategic direction of all four of the companies.

Before founding MBCI, Mike worked for TD Canada Trust for over 18 years and gained considerable management experience in retail banking, learning and development and mergers/acquisitions. Notably, Mike played an active role on the project management team responsible for overseeing one of Canada’s largest mergers between TD Bank and Canada Trust.

In 2003 he decided to pursue a career in the mortgage brokerage Industry. In 2005 he formed his own mortgage brokerage operation with Frank Napolitano. In 2008 the pair successfully merged Ottawa’s two largest mortgage brokerage firms to form the current Mortgage Brokers City Inc. which now has over 100 licensed brokers and agents and originates in excess of one billion dollars in mortgages on an annual basis.

As CEO of MBO/MBCI and the Advanced Group of Companies, Mike oversees the day to day operations while always remaining in tune with the real estate market, allowing him to identify both risks and opportunities.

Mike’s hands-on leadership approach keeps him involved at every level of the business, from legal and audit to investors and borrowers.

Mike earned his Bachelor of Arts (law/psychology) at Carlton University. He completed the Mortgage Agents’ Course via Seneca College in 2004 and earned his Accredited Mortgage Professional Designation in 2005. He acquired his Mortgage Brokers license in 2010 and continues to grow his industry knowledge each and every year through industry conferences and  continuing education courses.

Mike is the Ultimate Designated Person for and is a registered dealing representative with ACC. (Check his registration here.) He completed the Canadian Securities Course in 1995.

Under his leadership, MBCI has been honoured with the Consumer’s Choice award in the “Mortgage Companies and Brokers” category for nine consecutive years.

Mike remains committed to community service and is actively involved with the Mortgage Brokers Ottawa charity committee. He also spends countless hours volunteering as a coach for his two sons’ hockey teams.

Bill Harrington joined the AMIC Board in September 2019.

Bill obtained his Doctor of Laws degree from the University of Ottawa. He has 40 years of legal experience, both as a litigator and as an in-house counsel. Most recently, he was the General Counsel of The Canadian Real Estate Association, one of the largest single-industry trade associations in Canada. In that role, he was responsible for the effective operation of the legal department, and provided advice, opinion and support on a wide range of legal issues to the CEO, the executive, the Board of Directors and various committees and task forces.

He has extensive experience in corporate and governance issues, organizational ethics, and the drafting of bylaws, rules and policies.

Now retired from the practice of law, Bill provides governance support to organizations and acts as Governance Adviser for the tng leadership group.

Kim McKenney joined the Advanced MIC board in September 2019.

Kim McKenney started as a Mortgage Agent in 1988 under the mentorship of Nelly Van Berlo after graduating with a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Business Administration from Ottawa University. When The Mortgage Source opened in 1990, Kim worked as a mortgage agent until 1992 when she had her first child. For the next 13 years she operated a family owned commercial construction company where she learned the ins and outs of owning and managing a company, and how to negotiate with a hard sell.

In 2008, Kim returned to The Mortgage Source in a managerial role; a position would eventually lead her on the path to becoming the eventual successor.

Within a few years Kim became an owner of DLC The Mortgage Source and has now been the president and majority shareholder for three years. Her time as the leader of DLC The Mortgage Source has seen the company grow from 25 to 65 agents and is one of the Top 10 DLC franchises in Canada.

Kim is an industry leader and an avid participant in the mortgage community; having served as Vice-Chair on the Board of Directors for the Better Business Bureau for Eastern and Northern Ontario and the Outaouais and currently serving as past-president after two terms as President of the CMBA Ontario. Kim’s mandate with the CMBA board has been to improve educational offerings from the association. This desire for better access to education for both new and seasoned agents and brokers is reflected in Kim’s ongoing mentorship and support programs at DLC The Mortgage Source.

Kim’s charitable endeavors include being on the Board of Directors of Bullying Ends Here and supporting initiatives like Bikes for Kids and Planting Seeds International.

Jennifer Anderson has been connected with the leadership team of the Advanced Group of Companies since February 2008 when she joined MBCI as a licensed mortgage agent. Today, Jennifer’s responsibilities are divided between MBCI (a FSCO-licensed mortgage brokerage), AAL (a FSCO-licensed mortgage administrator), AMIC (an exempt market issuer and lender) and ACC (a registered exempt market dealer).

For MBCI, she provides support and administration services for four sales agents including preparation and submission of new mortgage applications to lenders, condition fulfillment, client servicing, general support and agent training. Also on behalf of MBCI and its agents, Jennifer acts as an alternative lending resource and private lending specialist, preparing and submitting files to non-bank and non-AAL direct private investors. This includes preparation and completion of statutory private lending documents to ensure compliance with FSCO regulations.

Since its launch in 2012, Jennifer has been responsible for all aspects of AAL’s direct private mortgage investment (DPMI) operations including underwriting, funding, payment administration, collections, renewals, tax account administration, and discharges. She is the company’s primary liaison with mortgage agents (internal/MBCI and external/non-MBCI), investors, borrowers, lawyers, and realtors in the DPMI channel. She is responsible for the compliant completion of statutory private lender disclosures as well as know-your-client (“KYC”) reviews and mortgage suitability assessments. In that capacity, her work touches on financial planning, investment advice and long term retirement planning in the private mortgage lending context.

Before joining MBCI and AAL, Jennifer spent twenty years with the Bank of Nova Scotia where she took increasingly responsible positions that culminated in her final role as a Financial Advisor. She earned her PFP designation with the bank in 2005.

Jennifer completed the Mortgage Agents’ Course in 2009. She earned her broker’s license in 2011. Jennifer also holds her broker’s license in the provinces of British Columbia and Alberta.

Her work for MBCI is regulated by the Financial Services Commission of Ontario (license # M08006868). Jennifer is also a member of Mortgage Professionals Canada.

She is involved with philanthropy as a member of MBCI charity committee. The committee organizes and participates in fundraising activities in support of local charities including the Ottawa Food Bank and the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Chris serves as Financial Controller for the Advanced Group of companies which includes Advanced Mortgage Investment Corporation (AMIC), Advanced Alternative Lending (AAL) and Advanced Capital Corporation (ACC).

At Advanced, Chris manages all financial operations, including accounting, reporting, audit and tax matters. He also leads the companies’ IFRS compliance and implementation projects.

Chris brings a wealth of financial leadership experience from diverse industries. Most recently, Chris joined us after 5 years at the Ottawa Senators where he was responsible for the financial operations and reporting of the Ottawa Senators Foundation and Ottawa Community Ice Partners - a public/private partnership with the City of Ottawa that owns the Sensplex recreation facilities. With a commitment to financial excellence, he is passionate about building efficient organizations with a culture of ongoing incremental improvements.

In his spare time, he coaches hockey and baseball, plays hockey and golf, acts as Treasurer for KMHA, enjoys quality time with his wife, son and cat, and lives for game nights with friends and family.

Kelly joins Advanced MIC with over 30 years experience in the financial industry. She started her career with one of the big banks, then moving to the mortgage industry, as a mortgage agent.

Kelly evolved her career working as a remote Signing Officer & Commissioner of Oaths with a large law firm, supporting the broker community.

She returned to the mortgage industry as an admin support, for a successful mortgage team in Ottawa and is now a valued member of our Underwriting Team at Advanced MIC

Her focus is always to provide exceptional customer service and building relationships with the broker community.
